Fueled by coffee in the morning, and sustained by wine in the evening. Moms and cheap wine go together like peanut butter and jelly, milk and cookies, salt and pepper, macaroni and cheese.
Throughout the ages, moms everywhere have looked forward to the clock striking 5pm (or sooner) so that they could start to pour their first glass of wine. And why shouldn’t we? We take care of the house, the kids, the husband, the laundry, the food shopping, the cooking, the cleaning, the breakfast, the lunch, the dinner, the baths, the tuck-them-in-and-get-the-hell-out-of-there-goodnight routines. Modern life is crazy stressful. We deserve to unwind. But we also don’t want to break the bank doing so. Gone are the days where you hide in the closet and drink your Charles Shaw. Now you can be proud and drink!
As someone who works in the wine industry and has tasted a lot of wines, I decided to put together this list along with input from a few friends and fellow Anaheim Moms Blog Contributors to help you find the best – and most affordable – selections for those times when you desperately need a glass of mommy’s special grape juice.
Here are some of our top favorite cheap wines:
Simpler Wines – $3.99 for a 4-pack, available on Trader Joe’s. Seriously the best buy out there. They come in little cans, perfect to throw in your purse or diaper bag. Take them to playdates, the park, the beach…you can probably down it in less than 5 sips. Of course, watching your kids should always come first so please drink responsibly!
Bogle Wine – $8.99 and any varietal they make is just wonderful. My personal favorite is the Old Vine Zin. You do need to let it breath a little bit before you pour yourself a nice big glass. The best places to buy this is either at Trader Joe’s or Costco. Click here to find out some other reasons why I love Costco!
Crane Lake Pinot Grigio – $9.99 for 3 at Sprouts right now. It is light and fruity but not too sugary. Reminded us of some much pricier ones that were tried during a recent wine tasting trip. Shocking how cheap it is!
Noble Vines Cabernet Sauvignon – $10 from Total Wine and More. Black cherry, herbs, coffee…what more could you want. And it was featured in an episode of The Big Bang Theory, so is practically famous.
14 Hands Cabernet Sauvignon – $8.97 from Total Wine and More. Inspired by the wild horses of Washington state, 14 Hands is a wine born from the hills.
Honorable Mentions (Just a bit over $10 but still money well spent):
Stama Zany Zin – $11.99 from Bevmo. OMG! I recently went to Lodi for work and Lodi is known for their Zins. Well, this one was sooooo good. And it doesn’t hurt that it has a great looking label. (Full disclosure: the company I work for printed it…so maybe I’m a bit biased).
Presto Sparkling Cuvée (Prosecco) – $13 for a 4-pack, available at Whole Foods Market. These are delicious, and the perfect serving size for those times when you want to celebrate a mid-week accomplishment, like getting both kids to bed before 9pm.
Now you know some of our go-to’s for everyday drinking occasions. What’s your favorite cheap wine?
